Over the last 2 years, 747 babies have been delivered at the Maternity Centre. Post-partum consultations doubled from 427 in 2022 to 842 in 2023 and pre-natal consultations provided to women have more than tripled from 107 in 2022 to 387 in 2023.
Women receiving HIV treatment before and during labour also tripled from 202 in 2022 to 633 in 2023, thereby reducing mother-to-child transmission.
The take-up of family planning services provided by the Maternity Centre has also been increasing from 542 in 2022 to 717 in 2023.
Besides maternal and family planning services, the Maternity Centre has also been used as a base from which to provide more general health services. Over the last 2 years, 17,822 malaria tests have been carried out and treatments provided have saved countless lives. Other conditions treated at the Maternity Centre include: TB, measles, diarrhoea, diabetes and hypertension.
Whilst the people of Idugo are hugely grateful to have this facility, there is a crying need for a general hospital to increase the scope and range of medical services available on the island. The Fundacao Zalala is actively seeking funding for the provision of a general health centre for the people of Idugo.
