Alex Shankland, Foundation Trustee, meets the Advisory Board of the Fundação

On his second field visit, Dr, Alex attended the fourth meeting of the Advisory Board of the Fundação. As well as having the opportunity to meet all the members of the Board, he contributed to many of the discussions and provided an overview of the relationship between the Boards of the two organisations – the UK-based Zalala Foundation and the Quelimane-based Fundação Zalala.

During his brief visit, Alex joined Angela and the Fundação staff and collaborators on a trip to Idugo where he participated in various meetings with local community leaders and others.

Upon arrival, he was greeted by the members of the girls’s clubs.

He then attended a meeting at the Community Centre with local leaders and community representatives to discuss the post-cyclone situation on the island. The leaders expressed thanks for the support provided by the Fundação, in particular the rebuilding of the damaged rooves of the two schools and the distribution of school materials for the pupils.

Next, he met with members of the girls’ groups and asked them about the work of the Clubs. The girls expressed their enthusiasm and sang about what they have learnt about their rights and the discovery of their own worth.

Next, he met with the Director of the Maternity Centre, the community-based health workers, the traditional mid-wives and the members of the Health Committee and the Co-Management Health Committee. The discussion focussed on the wide-ranging benefits of the Maternity Centre for all the inhabitants of Idugo Island and, even in some cases, the inhabitants of other localities who choose to make the journey to the Idugo Maternity in preference to the facilities closer to them.

The need for training for the Health Committee was raised as a high priority in order to maximise the benefits of this facility.

SUPPORT FOR THE VICITS OF CYCLONE FREDDY.

The damage done by the Cyclone is still very visible. Many families remain without shelter and food.
