On February 25th,  Angela Hadjipateras, Director of the Zalala Foundation attended the signing ceremony of the USD$78,900 (4.9 million meticais) contract  for the construction of a Health Centre on the Island of Idugo.  The ceremony took place at the Japanese Embassy in Maputo in the presence of the Ambassador, Hamada Keiji. The Health Centre comprises a treatment room, a consultation room, a waiting room, a pharmacy and a laboratory.

The island of Idugo already has a maternity hospital built by the Zalala Foundation and funded by the Government of Japan. The new Health Centre, to be completed in early 2026, will expand health services on the island and reduce the long queues of people waiting to be seen.

“The Health Centre will benefit the approximately 10,000 inhabitants of Idugo Island, who will have improved access to medical consultations, a treatment room and internal patient care,” explained Mr Keiji.

The new services to be provided will also help to contain  the spread of contagious and potentially fatal diseases, such as HIV, syphilis, dysentery and hypertension.

Upon her arrival in Quelimane,  the Director of the Fundacao Zalala, Jose Manuel Armando da Conceicao and the President, Angela Hadjipateras,  attended a meeting with the District Administrator of Quelimane and other Heads of Department to share this information as well as other projects currently being developed by Fundacao Zalala. The Administrator and his team warmly congratulated the Zalala Foundation for their significant contributions in the health and other sectors in the area.
